The Keeper's Hand

The archives drew the bracket too small and the photographs shot it too oblique — so the final curve was drawn by hand in a live viewport, faired to compass arcs, and cast eight times in iron.

There is a moment in every reconstruction when the archives run out. The 1860 sheets gave us the tower to the last brick course; the photographs gave us the proportions the drawings could not settle. But the walkway brackets — eight cast-iron consoles carrying the gallery around the crown — defeated every instrument we aimed at them. The shop drawing was inked too small, the photographs too oblique, the automated tracers too credulous about 166-year-old linework.

The mathematics pass

First, discipline. The crown had accumulated values from mixed sources — drawn labels, scan measurements, derived ratios — each defensible, each slightly inconsistent with its neighbors. We rebuilt it as one constrained system from drawn anchors only: every joint on the brick module, every level from a labeled dimension, the whole stack solved rather than assembled. The batter turned out to be concave — the drawn profile steepens in its last ten feet — and the model finally necked under its crown the way the photographs always insisted it should. A standing doctrine came out of it: the eye verifies, the math tunes.

The lens confesses

The lantern's optic had been carried as a placeholder extracted from an old scene file — the one part of the lighthouse not born from code. Research settled what actually stands behind the glass: the restored 1902 bivalve Fresnel, relit in 2023 as the active aid to navigation. It is now built procedurally — bullseye panels, catadioptric rings, brass and glass from registry dimensions. The entire lighthouse now rebuilds from a bare clone with one command. No binary secrets remain.

The keeper's hand

The brackets required a new instrument entirely. We connected the modeling session to a live viewport and discovered the annotation pen: a curve drawn by hand over the model can be harvested as coordinates, faired against compass geometry, and cast as iron. The bracket's S-curved arm went through the full gauntlet — the drawn radii from the 1860 sheet, hyperbolic studies, spline edits — and the shape that survived every comparison was drawn freehand in the viewport, then faired to two tangent arcs that hold within inches of the original ink. The final assembly — frame, sweeping arm, a half-heart at each post, an acorn pendant at each tip — was ratified live, piece by piece, and cast eight times onto the tower.

The last piece was hiding in plain sight in a photograph: the walkway carries a fascia band around its full perimeter that conceals the brackets' upper attachments. Only the pendants show below it. One octagonal band later, the render and the photograph finally describe the same building.

The registry records the arm's provenance the way it records every dimension: source, method, confidence. This entry reads differently from the others — drawn by hand, faired by compass — but it earns its place by the same rule as the rest. When the documents fall silent, a trained eye and a steady line are measurement instruments too.
